Network Outage in Acheson-Caldwell

Today at about 11:30 am network access to Acheson-Caldwell was cut.  After trouble-shooting the problem we determined that the fiber optic cable that supplies data access to Acheson-Caldwell had been physically damaged.

Our cabling vendor arrived on campus shortly after 5:00 pm this evening and is in the process of replacing the cable between Cheek-Evans and Acheson-Caldwell.  Once this work is completed we will be able to bring Acheson-Caldwell back online.  Our vendor believes the work will take about 4 more hours.

We will be investigating the problem further to determine the exact cause of the damage in hopes of preventing it in the future.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

Summer Projects: QuickTime Streaming Server Upgrade

This is another of the many upgrades that we are making this summer.  The server that was replaced was installed and ran without trouble for four solid years.  ITS replace is an Apple xServe with 2 Gigs of RAM, dual multi-core processors and 2TB of usable space.  It is running OSX server 10.5 and its primary roll as a QuickTime streaming media server for the Academic program and the main campus web site.

Network problem this afternoon

For several minutes this afternoon we experienced wide spread outage to campus network services.  This outage was caused by a failing power supply in one of our main campus switches.  We have been able to work around the problem, and a new unit should arrive first thing in the morning.

We apologize for any inconvenience this outage may have caused.

iPhone / iPod Touch Documentation Updated

We’ve gotten quite a few requests from folks asking about setting up Apple mobile devices to work with the Centre email system. Luckily, the process is easier than ever, but you might find it helpful to see the setup process broken down into steps.

We’ve posted a HowTo at our wiki, which you can access by browsing to http://wiki.centre.edu/its/index.php/IPhone_/_iPod_Touch_email_settings

Feel free to suggest any improvements to the document in the comments section.

Summer Projects: Chowan

Chowan, the new temporary home of Centre’s dinning services was opened for operations June 22, 2008.  Information Technology Services’ part of the facility was providing cabling and equipment for voice and data.

We installed 1 Cisco 3560 24 port PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch as well as two Cisco 1242 A/G wireless access points.  The switch is connected by fiber optic cable to both of Centre’s core backbone switches located in McReynolds Hall and Olin Hall at 1Gbit speed.  ITS also provided IP and analog phone service for the building though our network backbone.  The Sodexho staff will have access to wired and wireless data, while the students will be able to access Centre’s network service though wireless while visiting Chowan.

Callisto server outage: resolved

Earlier today we detected an attack on our secondary web server Callisto, which powers a handful of services to the campus (blogs, wikis, surveys and the CTL equipment reservations system). We quickly isolated the threat and disabled access until we were sure the server was protected. (more…)

Delivery Failure and Undelivered Messages

We’ve received several emails and calls from various members of the Centre community over recent days about a rash of “Delivery failure” and “Undelivered” email messages. Sometimes these are in a foreign language (Russian is the most popular), and sometimes they aren’t. Some are getting just a handful, others get 30 or 40 (like me!), and some have as many as 150 (!) messages showing up in their Inbox. We wanted to send out a note to let everyone know what was going on.

The short answer: It’s a bunch of spammers. (more…)
