Summer Reading-Corrected Link
Here is the correct link to the NPR article discussed in yesterday’s post. Seattle Librarian, Nancy Pearl, gives her recommendations for summer reading. There are several suggestions for novels and some non-fiction titles are recommended as well. Happy Reading!

Summer Reading
Summer is a great time to catch up on your reading, ask anyone. Nancy Pearl, the Seattle librarian famous enough to have an action figure modeled after her, has put together a summer reading list. Featured on NPR, Nancy Pearl is the author of Book Lust and has a large following. Okay, maybe most of her fans are other librarians, but she is famous for her effort to get all of Seattle reading the same book. I thought that such a famous reader must have some good recommendations. Here is a link to the NPR feature on Summer Reading:

Nancy Pearl offers a good mix of fiction and non-fiction in her list. I often find that I do not have the time to read as many books as I plan for each summer, but I found a couple of titles in her list that I will make room for. Happy Reading!

Voicethread
The Library, Center for Teaching and Learning and faculty member Beau Weston collaborated on a faculty workshop for the past two days. Many ideas were shared, technologies explored and connections made. One of the technologies presented today by Keeta Holmes and Candace Bonnett is Voicethread.
Voicethread allows for still images to be uploaded and reformatted into a movie-like presentation, complete with added narration and tagging capability. The materials generated can then be shared with colleagues and friends or posted on your website. This is a very fun tool that is easily used and it is free! For some more information on this application and to register for an account in order to use the product, take a look at this website:
One way this tool might be used would be with foreign language students, given that a recording component is available.

ATLA Religion Database
EBSCO Publishing, in collaboration with the ATLA, has enhanced the Scripture Authority File functionality available on ATLA Religion Database, ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials and ATLASerials Religion Collection via EBSCOhost.
Previously, ATLA Religion Database, ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials and ATLASerials Religion Collection via EBSCOhost included a flat scripture authority file that displayed scripture references in alphabetical order and required users to search for exact scripture references indexed in a given citation.
With the new authority file, users can browse the books of the bible in canonical order and drill down to the chapter, then verse level. Selecting an entry at the book, chapter, or verse level will execute a search for all records indexed with that book, chapter or verse.
With the new scripture authority file, EBSCO has added an expanded scripture reference searching for records indexed with a scripture range. For example, if a user selects Acts in the new scripture authority and drills down through Chapter 1 and elects to search Verse 5, they will return records indexed with Acts 1:5, as well as records indexed with Acts 1:1-11 or Acts 1:1-15:35. Oxford Encyclopedia of Popular Music
The library has had to reevaluate many of our holdings for the coming fiscal year due to budgetary concerns. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Popular Music will not be updated after May of 2009. We will continue to have access to this product through February of 2010, but we are unable to purchase the perpetual access package and our subscription will expire at the end of February.
All of our other Oxford music Online products will continue to be available. The only difference will be that the Encyclopedia of Popular Music will no longer be included in this package.
I will continue to offer updates to our holdings as changes are made in the coming months, so stay tuned!

Delicious
I have not posted for a few days as I have been out of the office. My eldest son graduated from high school this week.
I thought I would share some information on a social bookmarking tool that can be very helpful for organizing websites found when searching online. Here is some information from the Delicious website:
What is Delicious?
Delicious is a social bookmarking service that allows users to tag, save, manage and share web pages from a centralized source. With emphasis on the power of the community, Delicious greatly improves how people discover, remember and share on the Internet.
Things you can do with Delicious
Bookmark any site on the Internet, and get to it from anywhere
Instead of having different bookmarks on every computer, Delicious makes it easy to have a single set of bookmarks kept in sync between all of your computers. Even if you’re not on a computer you own, you can still get to your bookmarks on the Delicious website.
Share your bookmarks, and get bookmarks in return
If your friends use Delicious, you can send them interesting bookmarks that they can check out the next time they log in. Of course, they can do the same for you. As you explore the site and find interesting users, you can use our Subscriptions and Network features to keep track of the Delicious tags and users you find most interesting.
Discover the most useful and interesting bookmarks on the web
See what’s hot with Delicious users by checking out our popular tags. By looking at popular bookmarks for a tag, you’ll be able to discover the most interesting bookmarks on the topics you’re most interested in. Browse bookmarks on just about anything from the best programming tips to the most popular travel sites, all in an easy to read format.
I found a wonderful e-tutorial online that is very easy to follow and thought I would share this with you:
