New Historic Postcard Exhibit

by carrie.frey

A new online exhibit of postcards has been added to the Centre College Digital Archives.  This exhibit includes postcards depicting Centre College, KCW, Danville, and the surrounding region. Some of these postcards were already  in the Centre College archive collection, and some were purchased  on eBay.

Titled Wish You Were Here: Historic Postcards from Danville, Ky, this online exhibit allows the viewer to take a peek back in time.  There are views of several churches included in the exhibit, as well as some spectacular glimpses of Main Street as it appeared in the early 1900’s.  The URL is

http://www.centre.edu/web/library/sc/special/postcards/pc.html

The illustrations are charming and it is interesting to see not only how much has changed in the physical layout of the area, but also how modern conveniences and technologies have drastically changed the face of some of these historic scenes.

The route is Homepage | Special Collections | Special Exhibits | Wish You Were Here. The title is Wish You Were Here: Historic Postcards from Danville, Kentucky.

First Year Students-Win a $100 gift certificate by filling out a brief survey

by carrie.frey

All first year Centre College students should have received an e-mail requesting that they fill out a library survey.  This survey, titled the Research Practices Survey, provides library staff with information regarding the skills, preferences, and needs of incoming Centre College students.

Academic research is quite different at the college or university level from the research you might have been asked to do as a high school student.  The Centre Librarians are here to assist with your research needs and this survey allows us to plan effective services and research instruction sessions.

Take a few minutes to fill out the survey and you will have a chance at winning a $100 gift certificate to your choice of Amazon or the Centre College Bookstore!

Research Practices Survey

by carrie.frey

The library staff will be administering the Research Practices Survey to our incoming First Year Students starting next week.  Students will have three weeks to complete the survey.  Each student who fills out the survey completely will be entered into a drawing for a $100 Amazon or Centre Bookstore giftcard.

The Research Practices Survey provides invaluable information to library staff on the research skills, preferences and needs of the incoming students.  The survey will be administered again in the spring and this will provide a look at how the skill set of these students has changed, if at all, over the course of the academic year.  Comparison data is also provided for other institutions administering the survey in the fall and the spring.

Flickr and Library of Congress

by carrie.frey

Although I have uploaded my own personal photos to Flickr and searched there for photos in areas of interest several times, it never occurred to me to search Flickr for any serious research purpose.  I recently ran across some collections in Flickr that had been uploaded by the Library of Congress, however, and thought it would be useful to share my findings.

The Library of Congress has uploaded a number of different types of photos, as well as a few collections.  One such collection, that may be of interest to history scholars, is the Illustrated Newspapers project, found at this link:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/sets/72157619452486566/

The photos here chronicle pages from newspapers spanning the time period 1880 and 1922 and include newspaper titles from 17 states, as well as from the District of Columbia.

Another interesting collection includes photos chronicling the accomplishments of women, primarily from the time period 1910-1940.

Check out the Library of Congress flicker account to see these collections and many others and have a look at Historical events, captured as they were happening.

A Virtual Visit to the Louvre

by carrie.frey

Many of us, and most of our students, will never have the opportunity to visit the Louvre and marvel at the beautiful works of art housed therein.  A new database available at the Louvre website now makes it possible to view the artworks on display at the Louvre and to obtain information about these works in English.  Find the English version of the Atlas database at this link:

http://cartelen.louvre.fr/cartelen/visite?srv=crt_frm_rs&langue=en

The Atlas database covers all works displayed in the museum, as well as providing explanatory text, in English.
