New Historic Postcard Exhibit

by carrie.frey

A new online exhibit of postcards has been added to the Centre College Digital Archives.  This exhibit includes postcards depicting Centre College, KCW, Danville, and the surrounding region. Some of these postcards were already  in the Centre College archive collection, and some were purchased  on eBay.

Titled Wish You Were Here: Historic Postcards from Danville, Ky, this online exhibit allows the viewer to take a peek back in time.  There are views of several churches included in the exhibit, as well as some spectacular glimpses of Main Street as it appeared in the early 1900’s.  The URL is

http://www.centre.edu/web/library/sc/special/postcards/pc.html

The illustrations are charming and it is interesting to see not only how much has changed in the physical layout of the area, but also how modern conveniences and technologies have drastically changed the face of some of these historic scenes.

The route is Homepage | Special Collections | Special Exhibits | Wish You Were Here. The title is Wish You Were Here: Historic Postcards from Danville, Kentucky.

ATLA Religion Database

by carrie.frey

EBSCO Publishing, in collaboration with the ATLA, has enhanced the Scripture Authority File functionality available on ATLA Religion Database, ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials and ATLASerials Religion Collection via EBSCOhost.

Previously, ATLA Religion Database, ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials and ATLASerials Religion Collection via EBSCOhost included a flat scripture authority file that displayed scripture references in alphabetical order and required users to search for exact scripture references indexed in a given citation.

With the new authority file, users can browse the books of the bible in canonical order and drill down to the chapter, then verse level. Selecting an entry at the book, chapter, or verse level will execute a search for all records indexed with that book, chapter or verse.

With the new scripture authority file, EBSCO has added an expanded scripture reference searching for records indexed with a scripture range.  For example, if a user selects Acts in the new scripture authority and drills down through Chapter 1 and elects to search Verse 5, they will return records indexed with Acts 1:5, as well as records indexed with Acts 1:1-11 or Acts 1:1-15:35.  For more information, check here: http://www.centre.edu/web/library/db/atla.html

Oxford Encyclopedia of Popular Music

by carrie.frey

The library has had to reevaluate many of our holdings for the coming fiscal year due to budgetary concerns.  The Oxford Encyclopedia of Popular Music will not be updated after May of 2009.  We will continue to have access to this product through February of 2010, but we are unable to purchase the perpetual access package and our subscription will expire at the end of February.

All of our other Oxford music Online products will continue to be available.  The only difference will be that the Encyclopedia of Popular Music will no longer be included in this package.

I will continue to offer updates to our holdings as changes are made in the coming months, so stay tuned!
